Oxford is a place where history lies. It is one of
the oldest cities in England.
Once I stepped out from the Oxford train station, initially
it was not that kind of smoothing-quiet feeling that I expected if compared to
Cambridge, until I reached the street where the famous Blackwell Bookstore is
located.
Other than the world-known Oxford University which
has its branches and campuses scattered all around the town just like Cambridge
University, there are also other attractions such as the Christ Church, Oxford
Castle, Oxford Word Press, Blackwell, and others that you can easily searched
on the internet. The old building that I felt is interesting is the Oxford
Castle, which was actually earliest recorded as a old prison used to imprison
misbehaving students. The most interesting incident is that the famous
murderess Mary Blande was hanged to death at this castle.
Well, what I enjoyed the most during my trip is to
walk along the long old historical street where all the famous historical
churches and colleges lie.
On that particular Sunday, I had no idea what was
happening when I saw so many Oxford students wearing tuxedo and some kinda
modern “tuxedo-dress” walking along the old street, which I suspected might be
their graduation day. This phenomenon just making me felt even more that I
had time-travelled back to the old centuries of England, watching those
educated smart person walking along the busy old street, or maybe riding on
horses and carts.
Another memorable tiny bit is that when my travel
mate, Siaw Wee, and I were sitting on the grass in front of one of the
attraction (it is an old building that I can’t remember its name ><), we
watched travellers passing by, some Oxford students taking photos, and a bunch
of cute kindergarten kids passing by with their innocent talking voices, wind
breezing, sun shining…. Everything was just right, except more food for our
random lunch picnic hahahaha :)
1 day is enough for a visitor, however if I have the
opportunity, I will like to explore more shops in Oxford, and travel to the
palace at the outskirt of Oxford.
Last but not least, the Bicester village near
Oxford is worth-a-go if you are a brand-lover, as it is cheaper. However, for a
“noob” person like me, I don’t know any brands and prices, went there whole day
but bought nothing and just felt that it is expensive compared to normal brands
like Primark, New Look, Republic etc.
And yes, remember not to choose Sunday to travel as
shops and attractions will close earlier. Saturday is always the best choice to
do everything.
